CITEC upgrades its Tier 1 Enterprise Storage capacity

15 June 2006

CITEC has completed an update of its disk storage hardware to give clients the latest in Tier 1 Enterprise class disk storage technology and performance.

Principal Technology Consultant Gary Whitelaw said Tier 1 Enterprise storage provided clients with the highest levels of disk storage facilities for their mission critical, recently and regularly accessed and highly sensitive files.

Storage technology"The latest Tier 1 systems offer leading edge disk technology with markedly improved performance, in particular for disk capacity, scalability, feeds, access speed and connectivity," Gary said.

"CITEC's new HDS USP 100 disk arrays currently have over 30TB (terabytes) of data storage capacity.

"This is equivalent to 45,000 data CDs stacked 54 metres high or one and a half times the content of the 20 million books in the US Library of Congress.

"CITEC will regularly increase its Tier 1 capacity as client needs grow," he said.

Project co-ordinator, Craig Mackie said that each of the HDS arrays was scalable up to 300TB of internal storage.

"The project replaced five existing Tier 1 disk arrays (two HDS and three EMC) located in both CITEC data centres.

"Over a period of five months data was seamlessly migrated to the new disk arrays, fitting in with customer business and technical requirements," he said.

Gary said the old disk arrays had their content erased prior to their removal from CITEC to ensure the security of client information.

"We used a certified; three-pass data scrubbing process writing binary zeros and ones across all disk sectors," he said.

"This process, conducted by the hardware vendors, provides customers with a guarantee that no information remained on the superseded equipment," Gary said.

The last of the old disk arrays was decommissioned with clients being migrated to the new arrays. Following data scrubbing they were removed from the data centre at the end of March.

CITEC also provides clients with access to almost 50TB of Tier 2 enterprise storage capacity for less mission critical storage requirements.
