"What goes around comes around - lessons learned from ICT outsourcing and the shift to the new utility" is the subject of a whitepaper which CITEC has recently published.

The whitepaper identifies and explores the relationship between ICT outsourcing and the availability of new technology in the form of a metered "pay as you go" service that delivers purportedly improved benefits to both the client and vendor.

"Capacity planning for IT system usage peaks and troughs has always been a key challenge for CIOs and CFOs," said Mike New of CITEC's Infrastructure Management team.

"Any error in judgment could potentially cost a company thousands, and drastically impact performance of an enterprise system and a company's bottom line.

"Utility computing as a business strategy is all about more cost-effective use of an outsourced IT service," Mike said.

In principal, utility computing does not require capital outlay at the client's end, and clients only pay for what they use, when they use it. Using new metering technology, clients can see IT costs up front so they can more accurately measure, manage and make informed business decisions. This means companies no longer have to predict the future requirements of their business or pay for un-used capacity.
