CITEC keeps Queensland schools connected

01 December 2004

When CITEC was awarded a $6.5M, three-year contract to manage Education Queensland’s wide area network (WAN), the pressure was on to transfer the management of the network within a short time-frame and without interruption to the network.

The WAN provides network connectivity for 1,292 primary and secondary schools and 35 district offices located across Queensland – as far north as Malu Kiwai State School in the Torres Strait and as far west as Camooweal State School, near the Queensland/Northern Territory border.

In less than one month, CITEC took responsibility for the WAN and established a help desk to field calls relating to network connectivity and the managed Internet service.

Thirteen CITEC staff based at our head office in Brisbane now field calls from MIS Administrators across the state, with enquiries relating to school administration of user accounts, email filtering, web access and hosting, browsers, network connections and security issues.

As part of the contract, CITEC also oversees service level agreement management for Education Queensland’s Internet connectivity, managed Internet services and carrier services, which are provided by third parties.

CITEC’s Managing Director, Mark Rainbird recently hosted a visit by the Director-General of Education and the Arts, Ken Smith, to demonstrate how CITEC delivers these vital services to the department’s teachers, students and administrators.

Joining Ken for a tour of CITEC’s facilities were Noel Whittaker, Bill Clarke and Henk Vullers, also from Education and the Arts, and Mal Grierson, Director-General of the Department of Public Works.
